Boston Expressionism at the Museum

The Danforth Museum of Art continues its commitment to Boston Expressionism with ambitious shows as part of the Museum’s on going exploration of work by Boston Expressionist painters, beginning with Jack Levine: Political Discourse in 2005, Hyman Bloom: A Spiritual Embrace in 2006, Arthur Polonsky: Thief of Light in 2008, and Jason Berger: Directed Vision in 2009.  Hyman Bloom and Jack Levine both realized great success in the late 1930’s, and inspired a generation of young painters who studied with Karl Zerbe at the School for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  Many of these talented students were first generation Jewish immigrants, who drew upon their Eastern European heritage.  Working from memory rather than directly from nature, they often depicted scenes inspired by the Hebrew Talmud to express their profound belief in the human spirit.  Considered together, the work of these painters reveals a unique glimpse into Boston’s Jewish cultural history from post World War II until the present time.

Past exhibitions featuring work by David Aronson, Gerry Bergstein, and Henry Schwartz convey different aspects of this fascinating story, and we very much hope that you will become engaged by attending exhibitions & openings, scheduling a docent-led tour for yourself or and small groups of friends or members of your organization
