Looking to the Future: Danforth Strategic Planning 2010

Letter from Robert Martin - November 2010

Dear Museum Community,

I am pleased to be writing to you as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and look forward to communicating over the next few months with regular updates in our monthly newsletters.

When Museum Director Katherine French invited me to chair this exciting planning effort, I was delighted because I’ve witnessed the vital and dynamic role the Danforth Museum of Art plays not only here in the Metrowest community, but also in the boarder arts and educational communities throughout the New England states.  Despite the current economic recession, the Museum continues to excel as a non profit arts organization.  However, we are aware that the future holds significant challenges, as well as for other non profits as we work to:

  • Secure our facility and plan for its renovation
  • Ensure continued fiscal health and stability
  • Further enhance the Museum’s presence as a premier NE cultural center

For these reasons, the Museum’s Board of Trustees is developing a 3 Year Strategic Plan that will define future directions and priorities.  As part of this process, we aim to accomplish the following:

  • Review our Mission Statement and develop a Vision Statement
  • Identify strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities
  • Establish direction for the next 3 years
  • Set goals and develop action plans to realize these goals
  • Define metrics that speak to the Museum’s successful position and performance, as compared to other arts organizations.

Together with other members of the Strategic Planning Committee, who include Trustees Brian Moore, Richard Perse and Colleen Rolph; Overseers Adam Blumer and Linda Poras; and Museum staff members Julia Brucker, Katherine French, Mary Kiely and Pat Walker, I will work to draft a Strategic Plan that is faithful and reflective of the wishes of the community.  As Committee Chair, I will keep you informed about our progress and receive feedback.  Please feel free to contact me at rmartin@framingham.edu if you wish to share ideas or comment at any point.  We look forward to an exciting and productive year.

With best wishes,

Robert A. Martin
