Gallery Talk Wednesday, January 16, 2008, noon
Reception Saturday, February 9, 2008, 6 - 8 p.m.
The Danforth Museum of Art is pleased to present Constellations, an exhibition of 16 light boxes by local artist Sarah Williams. On view in the Swartz Family Gallery from January 16th through February 24th, as part of the New England Currents series, these works presented in a darkened room incorporate aspects of craft, renaissance art making and contemporary applications of light. On Wednesday, January 16th, the artist will speak on her work in the gallery at 12 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Her current work is a series of puncture drawings that have been made into light boxes. Her process of using needles and patterning is in direct reference to craft-oriented media such as embroidery and stained glass, both traditional family practices. By playing with space using light, Sarah works to create a retinal experience reminiscent of the “Lite Bright.” Through this exploration, she weaves together imagery that reflects her sense of humor, her view of the world and the history of craft. These constellations are an extension of the artist that relates an aspect of narrative to be interpreted by the viewer.

After poking holes in black paper, Sarah Williams decided, “Let there be light.” So the Worcester artist fixed a light bulb inside an empty black wooden and metal box and plugged it into a socket. And beams of light shone through the punctured paper, illuminating her graven images like stars in the void. Sarah Williams saw her light boxes were good and funky.
Viewers can see for themselves by visiting her show, “Constellations,” at the Danforth Museum of Art. . . .
