About the Artist
Katherine Gulla received her B.F.A. in Painting from Lehman College and studied painting in the graduate program at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Her work was recently showcased at the 2007 New England Photography Biennial here at the Danforth. She has also exhibited her work throughout various settings in Boston, such as Gallery Kayafas and HallSpace. Her video productions have also gained national recognition on WGBH. One of her works entitled “MY TOWN/MIO PAESE” highlights her strong ties to Italian-American culture.
About the Exhibit
Gulla’s work reflects a sincere interest in how art and photographic processes intersect. Cast Shadows came to life by looking at and ultimately capturing the shadowy “essence” of trees. Gulla’s interest in the ephemeral shapes that are produced by light and how they are reflected on a surface truly dictates how she creates her art. She seeks to capture tree shadows through the use of her camera and the photographic processes that go along with it. Her 35mm photographs are manipulated in Photoshop, printed onto clear film, and mounted onto clear Plexiglas. Her use of clear surfaces to do this allows for an actual shadow to be captured and seen as an object. Gulla’s work comes full circle as her two-dimensional transparencies cast their own shadows in space.
