Every day since 1987 photographer Karl Baden has made a photograph of his face, a comment on the use of photography as both documentation and visual narrative. This practice continued after his diagnosis for aggressive prostate cancer in 2000, and the result is Baden’s autobiographical record of his experience—one that served to keep him focused and emotionally stable. His exploration of ephemeral self portraiture touches upon many aspects of photographic history. However, Baden’s relationship to his daughter forms an emotional backbone to the piece, one that lends poignancy to on-going concerns. “After cancer, one lives with the hope that the disease has left the body,” the artist remarks. “One learns to accept that it doesn’t leave the mind.”

Born in NYC in 1952, photographer Karl Baden received his BFA from Syracuse University in 1974 and his MFA in Photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle in 1979. He has taught photography at Boston College since 1989, and exhibited widely throughout the United States. Baden’s work appears in numerous private collections, as well as the permanent collections of many museums.
