An Educators’ Evening with Dr. Emmett G. Price III

The Danforth Museum of Art hosted an Educators' Evening with Dr. Emmett G. Price III on Thursday, February 3 at 4 pm. Dr. Price, is an associate professor of music and African American studies at Northeastern University where he also serves as chair of the Department of African American Studies. He is regarded as one of the nation's leading experts on African American Music and Culture as well the executive editor of the Encyclopedia of African American Music, author of HIP HOP Culture, and editor of The Black Church, Hip Hop Culture and the Dilemma of the Generational.
The evening concentrated on how to stimulate student learning through captivating teaching. Dr. Price offered many practical tips in how to use Black Creative Expression as a catalyst for connecting with students and inspiring more focused learning. Through his interactive presentation, audience members were inspired to learn more about the Power of Black Creative Expression and how its power can be used to transform the lives of young people of all races, ethnicities, and cultures.
Special attention was paid to the work of longtime Framingham resident Meta Warrick Fuller, a visionary leader amongst the giants of the art world and generally considered one of the first African-American female sculptors of importance. She studied under a number of different sculptors, including a one-on-one critique with Auguste Rodin. She is often described as an influential precursor to the Harlem Renaissance who is best-known for her groundbreaking depictions of the African and African-American experience.
The event began with a meet and greet at 4 pm and Dr. Price’s talk at 4:30 pm. Following the talk, there was an opportunity for a question and answer session and tours of the Meta Warrick Fuller sculpture collection. This was also an opportunity to see the Danforth Museum exhibitions of Rhoda Rosenberg, Brice Marden, Sachiko Akiyama, and Carol Keller.

Educators' Evening - September 25, 2008
Local elementary school teachers attended the Danforth Museum of Art's first Educators’ Evening on September 25, 2008. Attendees enjoyed light refreshments while learning about current and upcoming exhibitions, and their connections to the classroom. Special focus was placed on upcoming exhibitions featuring Sedrick Huckaby, Faith Ringgold, Jacob Lawrence, and Meta Fuller.

Barry Gaither - Since 1969, Edmund Barry Gaither has been Director and Curator of the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (NCAAA). He developed the Museum from a concept to an institution celebrating the visual arts heritage of black people worldwide.
Diane Daily - As the Education Programs Manager at the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Diane Daily will share her expertise on applying to grants that support creative learning in schools. Local cultural council grant forms will be available.
