About the Artist
Beth Krommes was born in 1956 and grew up in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. She received her BFA from Syracuse University and her Master’s Degree in Art Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In addition to her college education, she spent a year studying at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, England. Prior to her illustration career, Beth worked as a public school art teacher, a manager of a fine handcraft shop, and an art director for a computer magazine. She has been working as a full-time freelance illustrator since 1989, focusing on children's book illustration for the last ten years.
Ms. Krommes cites painting as her first love, but in 1982 became interested in wood engraving. Her first illustrations were created using wood engravings, but she soon switched to scratchboard, as it created the same look in less time. Her first children’s book, Grandmother Winter, was published in 1999. Recently, the book, The House in the Night, illustrated by Beth Krommes, won the Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book.
Beth Krommes currently resides in Peterborough, New Hampshire with her husband and two daughters. She says her mission is, “to create artwork that is joyful in spirit, universal in nature, and accessible and affordable to others.”

About the Exhibit
The Danforth Museum of Art is pleased to present a selection of original scratchboard illustrations by Beth Krommes. These illustrations come from a selection of Ms. Krommes illustrated children’s books. Some of the books included are, The House in the Night, Grandmother Winter, The Sun in Me: Poems About the Planet, and The Hidden Folk.

The Museum will host a book siging with Ms. Krommes, on Sunday, March 7th, 2010 at 1: 30 pm.
Carol Goldenberg, who designed some of Ms. Krommes' books, will talk about the design process on Sunday, February 28th, 2010 at 3pm. Carol Goldenberg has designed many award-winning books for children, including five Caldecott medal winners. A graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design, Carol has been Art Director for Houghton Mifflin Juvenile Books and for Clarion Books in New York. Her book designs have been recognized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, The New England Book Show, among other design competitions. Carol currently works as a freelance book designer and lecturer.
