Catherine Carter - Sky, Stem, Stream

New England Currents at the Danforth Museum

September 24 — October 22, 2005

Gallery Talk Saturday, October 15 at 3 p.m., followed by reception

The paintings of MetroWest artist, Catherine Carter will be on display in the Swartz Gallery at the Danforth Museum of Art from September 24 - October 22, 2005, to launch the fall season of New England Currents, a series of exhibitions by New England based artists. Ms. Carter will give a talk on her work on Saturday, October 15 at 3 p.m.

Inspired by calligraphic marks that explore the connection between handwriting and drawing, Carter creates canvases of looping, interlocking forms. Her most recent paintings from a series titled, "Sky, Stem, Stream" are simplified views of nature, each with vantage points above or below the scenery, as if for instance a bird were looking down from the air. The images depict line-oriented natural forms overtaking a broad, solid field of color. She spray- paints loop shaped stencils onto canvases in white, yellow, green or blue tones. Carter chooses to use a square format to paint on, challenging the shape of the traditional rectangular landscape.

This will be Catherine Carter's first solo museum exhibition. She is represented by Genovese/Sullivan in Boston, where she previously has had two solo shows. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Carter has a background in fashion design and received a MFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She currently teaches at Framingham State College.
